Dead Letter Office: 'NYT' Obits Editor Answers Questions

Posted
By: E&P Staff In yet another effort at transparency, The New York Times has been opening up top editors, including Bill Keller, to online questioning from average folks in recent months. Today it brought out a not so well known figure, Bill McDonald, obituaries editor at the paper since February.

Naturally, this produced some fair yucks right away. The first Q & A was topped with, "Stop. Stop. You?re Killin? Me."

This first query, from Steve Zane, was, "Do you consider your position a dead end job? (Had to ask.)."

McDonald's reply: "I'm actually glad you asked. I've been getting questions in a similar vein (not the jugular) almost since the day I took the job. Someone asked me if we aspire to deathless prose. A colleague asked if we've ever buried a lead. But to answer your question, no, I actually think of it as a job made in heaven."
