By: E&P Staff The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and the Democratic National Committee are running ads in Wednesday papers criticizing the ethics of six House Republicans.
The ads, which are placed in newspapers in the representatives' districts, take issue with Randy Cunningham of California, Tom DeLay of Texas, Bob Ney of Ohio, Richard Pombo of California, Rob Simmons of Connecticut, and Charles H. Taylor of North Carolina.
The ad buy totals $36,000.
Representative Rahm Emanuel of Illinois, chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, told The New York Times which reported the story today: "These six congressmen came to Washington to be agents of change. But Washington's ways have changed them. They're working more for their special-interest contributors than for their constituents."
One ad placed in The North County Times, in Escondido, Calif., asks: "What's happened to Duke Cunningham? Fifteen years ago we sent Duke Cunningham to Washington to work on things Californians care about: more jobs, affordable health care, a secure retirement. Now, Duke Cunningham's work in Congress is generating headlines on his ties to contractors and his 'sweetheart' deal on a home sale. We knew Duke Cunningham would leave California to work in Washington. We didn't know he'd leave behind his California values."
Cunningham is under investigation by a grand jury for selling his California home for less than market value to a government contractor.
A spokesman for the National Republican Congressional Committee, Carl M. Forti, told the Times: "The advertisements will do no good at all. People are more worried about their vacations than about an election 16 months away. The Democrats are trying to manufacture political momentum they don't have."
