By: Dennis Rogers, a veteran columnist at The News & Observer of Raleigh, will retire next month, executive editor Melanie Sill said Tuesday.

Rogers worked at the newspaper for 31 years, most recently writing columns about North Carolinians affected by the Iraq war.

"He told me (Tuesday) that he's as proud of the series of columns as he is of anything he has done, and so are we," Sill said in a memo to the newspaper's staff.

Rogers came to The News & Observer from the Charlotte News. He became a columnist six month later. Most recently, Rogers has written two columns and several editorials each week.

Sill said Rogers and his wife, Holly, have sold their home and plan to hit the road in a 31-foot recreational vehicle.
