DENVER JOA GETS COMPLAINTS FROM AREA PUBLISHERS

By: Staff Reports Weekly Publisher Requests Hearings

The publisher of a weekly Denver paper says that a joint-operating agreement (JOA) between the city's Denver Post and Denver Rocky Mountain News will harm smaller publications, the Post reports.

H. Harrison Cochran, publisher of the Aurora Sentinel, has asked Attorney General Janet Reno to hold hearings on the proposed JOA. The two Denver dailies have requested an antitrust exemption so they can move forward with combining business operations, while maintaining separate newsrooms.

Cochran is not the first publisher to ask Reno for hearings on the JOA. Other publishers who have filed complaints include the publisher of the Colorado Daily, a college newspaper at the Boulder campus of University of Colorado, and Jeffco Publishing, a publisher of weeklies in a Denver suburb.

Smaller newspapers are concerned about predatory pricing in the suburbs and relationships with nearby papers, such as the Daily Camera in Boulder.

Despite the Justice Department's formal comment period ending on Oct. 12, Cochran's letter - along with others - has been added to the files.
