By: The Denver Newspaper Agency, which oversees business operations for The Denver Post and the Rocky Mountain News, has agreed to pay $75,000 to settle a pregnancy discrimination lawsuit, federal officials said Monday.
The DNA also agreed to hold employee training sessions on gender and pregnancy discrimination issues and to submit intermittent reports to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, which filed the lawsuit on behalf of former advertising manager Karen Stenvall.
The settlement was approved Friday by U.S. District Judge Walker D. Miller.
Officials of the newspaper agency did not immediately return messages.
Filed in September 2004, the lawsuit accused the newspaper agency of firing Stenvall when she was six months pregnant in May 2001 over her management style, even though she had achieved her sales objectives.
The year before her termination, Stenvall received a raise, bonuses of more than $24,000 and a commendation from her supervisor, EEOC attorney Mary Jo O'Neill said.
Pregnancy discrimination is prohibited by the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
