'der Freitag' Relaunched on vjoon K4 Cross-Media Platform

By: E&P Staff The German weekly der Freitag and its Web edition were launched earlier this year using the K4 cross-media publishing platform from vjoon of Boenningstedt, Germany.

Publisher Jakob Augstein relaunched the paper in February with a new approach to print and Web editions that exemplified how various media channels interlock: A community with hierarchic structure comprising users, bloggers and publicists directly influences content published in print and posted online. Aiming to maintain a dialogue with readers, Augstein sees the effort as part of a transition from traditional newspaper to participatory medium.

"K4 quickly became the first choice for a nascent editorial team that works for online and print editions," Deputy Editor-in-Chief Joern Kabisch said in a statement. "Both situations frequently call for highly flexible software, as well as mobile access possibilities. The workflow adapts quickly," and the system is accessible from the newsroom and remotely, he added.

Code Couture installed K4, provided training and support, and integrated with K4 the open-source Plone Web content management system from the Houston-based Plone Foundation. Integration enables der Freitag's editorial team to manage content delivered by partner publication The Guardian within K4. For implementation, extension of the content management system and creation of its Web site, der Freitag hired interface service provider Freshmilk GmbH.
