Derek Ali, 47, a reporter for the Dayton Daily News in Ohio, was killed at a private party on Sept. 19 while pushing a woman out of the line of gunfire. He was struck in the chest and died at the scene.

Ali, who had been working as a disc jockey at the party, was moving his equipment to his car when a group of men denied entry became angry and opened fire on the building.

Ali was hired by the Dayton Daily News in 1984 as an action line reporter and later became a regional reporter. He served as president and as an executive board member of the Dayton Association of Black Journalists. Ali was also an adjunct adviser for several years at the Tiger Times, a student newspaper at Stivers High School in Dayton. He mentored students interested in journalism.
