Detroit Dailies Make Mayor's Resignation 'Special'

By: Joe Strupp Detroit's two major daily papers made the most of Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's resignation Thursday after months of scandal-plagued problems that will likely send him to jail.

Both The Detroit News and Detroit Free Press published special section wraps Friday on Kilpatrick's revelations that he lied under oath and pleaded guilty to felony charges related to squandering some $10 million in city funds.

The News wrapped its main paper with an eight-page special section, while the Free Press provided a 20-page wrap, with a Page One editorial.

"It wasn't a hard decision," News Editor and Publisher Jonathan Wolman told E&P. "City hall is the lead, compelling story of the day."

Both papers still led their main front pages with news of John McCain's acceptance speech Thursday night.
