By: E&P Staff The Detroit News promoted five editors from inside the newsroom in a reorganization of key positions.
Don Nauss, 56, was promoted to deputy managing editor, in charge of overseeing the metro, business, state, and Washington desks, as well as special reporting projects. The former Detroit bureau chief for the Los Angeles Times has been at the News since 1999, serving as automotive editor, business editor, and assistant managing editor for news and business.
Kristi Bowden, 38, and Bill McMillan, 53, were named assistant managing editors. Bowden will have responsibilities including training, recruiting, and labor relations. She had been news editor since 2001. Previously, she served as assistant managing editor at Florida Today. McMillan will direct the paper's sports, news, and national desks. McMillan, who was promoted from sports editor, has worked for the News since 1986, including stints as deputy city editor, news editor, and executive sports editor.
Ruben Luna, 35, was promoted to sports editor from deputy sports editor, a position he has held since coming to the News in 2001.
Marti Davenport was named news editor. She joined the News in 1981.
Announcing the reorganization to the staff earlier this week, Managing Editor Sue Burzynski noted that all the promotions were internal. A News article by staff writer Nick Bunkley quoted her as telling the staff, "I'm happy to be able to assemble a team from the inside because they know the newspaper, they know the area, and they understand our readers."
