By: Joe Strupp Among the 20 victims who died in Sunday's tragic boating accident in upstate New York was a newspaper carrier who started a career delivering The Detroit News and Detroit Free Press at age 60.
Ann Beamish, 79, of Sterling Heights, Mich. began delivering the newspapers 19 years ago, according to the Detroit Free Press. Her efforts earned her a newspaper carrier of the year award last spring from the Central States Circulation Managers Association.
"This is a very sad day. Ann was loved by everyone here. She even helped her grandkids on their routes. She's irreplaceable," Gina McDonald, district representative for The Detroit Newspaper Partnership, told the Free Press. The paper also described her as "Feisty, generous and helpful."
Beamish died along with 19 others, many of them fellow Michigan seniors who were on a trip together, when the tour boat they were in capsized Sunday in Lake George, N.Y.
Ann Marsh, Beamish's granddaughter, said Beamish was on the trip with Carol Ann Marsh -- Ann Marsh's mother and Beamish's daughter -- when the accident happened, the Free Press reported.
"My grandmother was a feisty woman. That's probably the best way to describe her," Ann Marsh told the paper. "She was still delivering newspapers at 79 years old. She was a very generous person. She did a lot of things for a lot of people. This is shocking to our family and shocking to her friends."
