(AP) Joe Falls, a longtime sports writer for The Detroit News and a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, has died. He was 76.
Falls died of heart failure Wednesday after his diabetes steadily worsened over two years.
""I was always so proud of Joe, because he loved his job so much, and did it his whole life. There never was a day he didn't want to write,"" said his wife, Mary Jane.
Falls was a sports writer and columnist for the News from 1978 until his retirement last year. He started his career in 1953 as a copy boy for The Associated Press in New York. He transferred that year to the AP's Detroit bureau and also worked for the Detroit Times and the Detroit Free Press before moving to the News.
