By: E&P Staff Tribune Media Services, which was sued this week by Warren Beatty over rights to Dick Tracy, is involved in a deal that might bring the cartoon crimefighter to TV.
According to a release posted on the TMS Web site, Outlaw Productions and Lorenzo di Bonaventura recently secured rights to Dick Tracy from TMS. The plan is to pitch a "modern take" on the character to networks this summer.
The "Dick Tracy" comic, which TMS syndicates, previously spawned a live-action TV series that ran from 1950 to 1952 and an animated series that aired from 1961 to 1964. It also inspired a 1990 Disney movie that starred Beatty in the title role.
Beatty, in his $30-million lawsuit (E&P Online, May 17), said TMS violated an agreement to give the actor rights to make another movie featuring Dick Tracy.
