'Dilbert' Creator Enjoys Elvis Depiction

By: Dave Astor "Dilbert" creator Scott Adams' reaction to the "Pearls Before Swine" strips portraying him as a nutty Elvis impersonator?

"I thought they were funny," he told E&P, adding: "I am proud to be the first cartoonist to show his butt crack in the newspaper. That's something I can tell the grandkids!" Adams was referring to Friday's "Pearls Before Swine" comic that pictured him splitting his pants while doing karate moves outside "Gracebert" in the middle of the night.

Did Adams know in advance that Stephan Pastis would be featuring him in the Nov. 29-Dec. 4 sequence? "He e-mailed the strips to me before they ran, but I could only open two of them for some technical reason," said Adams, who read the other installments as they came out each day.

The "Dilbert" creator and Pastis -- described as "a great guy" by Adams -- share a friendship and syndication by United Media. They also have another connection: Adams helped "Pearls Before Swine" move from an online-only to print-syndicated comic by giving it a rave review on his Web site.

An E&P story giving an advance mention of the Adams-as-Elvis sequence was posted Nov. 22 on this site.
