'Dirt' is Done

By: E&P Staff Prairie Mountain Publishing has sent the youth oriented "dirt" six feet under.

The youth tab, which was aimed at college-age readers in Boulder, Colo., will be published for the last time on Sept. 28. The Daily Camera in Boulder launched the paper in August 2004.

According to the Camera, local changes in the market forced the shuttering of dirt. Initially the paper was published five days a week, but was scaled back to a weekly in December 2005. Staffers were cut or reassigned to the Camera.

Executives with Prairie Mountain felt that dirt was redundant, since it competed with other publications, including the Daily Camera's Friday Magazine.

Albert Manzi, president and CEO of Prairie Mountain and the Daily Camera's publisher, told the Camera, "We'd like to take those resources and utilize them in other areas."

The Camera plans to distribute its Friday magazine as a free standalone using dirt?s racks.
