Dow Jones to Shutter Orlando Plant

Posted
By: Jim Rosenberg Dow Jones gave employees notice Tuesday of its intent to close its Orlando, Fla., plant by early next year and transfer printing of The Wall Street Journal and Barron's to an unidentified contract printer in central Florida.

In an internal announcement, Operations Vice President Larry Hoffman said, "We expect the move to take place right after the first of the year. The move to a contract printer is being made to take advantage of spare press capacity in the central Florida area."

Hoffman called the Orlando operation has always been well run and "consistently scored high in print quality." The plant was the first in the company to transmit full pages by satellite. It also was the site of Dow Jones' first electronic pagination system -- one of the industry's earliest such efforts.

The IT group will plan the relocation of backup transmission circuits and advertising systems out of Orlando to existing Dow Jones data centers.

Hoffman told E&P today that Dow Jones is still in talks with possible printers.
