By: E&P Staff Robin Washington, editorial page editor of the Duluth (Minn.) News Tribune, has been named the inaugural recipient of the Be'chol Lashon Media Award, which the organization said was "established to honor excellence in coverage of the ethnic and racial diversity of world Jewry."
Washington received the award -- which will be given annually -- at the Be'chol Lashon International Think Tank in San Francisco, a conference for black, Latino, and mix-raced Jewish leaders.
"Robin Washington embodies what this award is all about," said Be'chol Lashon Director Diane Tobin. "It is vital for the community to know about how diverse Jews really are here in America and around the world."
The award cited Washington, who is black and Jewish, for "his journalistic excellence and passion in bringing the stories of Jews of color to mainstream American print and broadcast media over his 30-year career."
Washington was also named coordinator for future awards, which will include print, broadcast, film, and other media categories.
"There are many fascinating stories to tell about little-known Jewish communities," Washington said in a statement. "This work is crucial in breaking down stereotypes and deserves recognition."
A former columnist for the Boston Herald, Washington has also been a television producer whose work includes the PBS documentary "You Don't Have to Ride Jim Crow!," about the little-known first interracial Freedom Ride in 1947.
Be'chol Lashon, which means "in every tongue," is a research initiative of the Institute for Jewish & Community Research, which describes itself as an independent, non-partisan public policy institute dedicated to the growth of the Jewish community.
