News-Journal executive editor, died Sept. 18 in Daytona Beach, according to the newspaper. He was 69 and lived in Ormond Beach.
Dunkel was suffering from Hodgkin's Disease.
"He was a thoroughly professional newspaperman," said Tippen Davidson, president, CEO, and co-editor of
News-Journal. "He was a really expert newsroom executive."
Dunkel joined the paper as a sportswriter in 1954, and later worked in Chicago and Tokyo. For a time, he worked at the
Los Angeles Times and
Philadelphia Bulletin.
Dunkel returned to the Daytona Beach area in 1972 to run a family business, the Dunkel Index, a nationally syndicated sports team-rating system. His sons are now co-owners of the index, which is syndicated by the
News-Journal.
Dunkel rejoined the paper as Sunday editor in 1974 and held several positions before becoming executive editor in 1995. He retired in 1999.
A native of Dayton, Ohio, Dunkel studied at Wittenberg College and UCLA and served in the Army.
Survivors include his wife, Lee; two sons, Robert H., Alexandria, Va., and Richard H. Jr., Orlando; a brother, Robert, Paoli, Pa.; and three grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Habitat for Humanity, 121 Habitat St., Americus, GA 31709 or the Southern Poverty Law Center, 400 Washington Ave., Montgomery, AL 36104. A private memorial is planned.
