By: E&P Staff In an unusual move, Borders has secured the calendar rights for a comic that hasn't officially started syndication yet.
Scott Hilburn's "The Argyle Sweater" -- available as a strip or panel -- will be launched April 7 by Universal Press Syndicate. Early clients include the New York Daily News, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Detroit Free Press, Seattle Times, The Oregonian of Portland, and various Web sites operated by Media News Group.
Borders -- whose stores sell books, music, and more -- is working with Andrews McMeel Publishing, a sister company to Universal, on the 2009 calendar.
Another Universal sister compnay, uclick, started running Hilburn's comic in 2006 on its Comics Sherpa site for rookie cartoonists. In a few months, "The Argyle Sweater" moved to uclick's GoComics.com before being signed by Universal.
