By: E&P Staff On Friday, the official day of mourning in Haiti, marking one month after the Jan. 12 earthquake, the death toll of Haitian journalists stands at 26, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said.
CPJ said this "provisional" count is from International Media Support, a joint mission of groups including the Association of Haitian Journalists, SOS Journalistes, and the Group for Reflection and Action for Freedom of the Press. The mission has been to Leogane, Petit Goave, and Grand Goave, which were the areas hardest hit by the earthquake.
A month later, many news outlets remain shut because of the disaster, reports CPJ's Haiti consultant, Jean Roland Chery.
Of the 50 radio stations broadcasting in the capital of Port-au-Prince, for instance, only about a dozen are now on the air. Only four of the ten radio stations in Leogane are operating, CPJ reported.
Most television stations broadcasting from Port-au-Prince remain off the air, CPJ said.
