By: E&P Staff ECRM Imaging Systems, Tewksbury, Mass., installed in August an ECRM Mako NEWSmatic HS computer-to-plate system at the Daily Inter Lake, Kalispell, Mont. Part of the Hagadone Newspaper Network, the Daily Inter Lake circulates in Northwest Montana. It also produces several other dailies and outside jobs.
Since installing the Mako NEWSmatic, the paper reported it now takes a minute to create a plate, down from four minutes to burn a plate from film. The platesetter is rated at 125 plates per hour at 1016 dpi resolution.
"We have higher print quality and the registration is great," Production Manager Ken Varga said in a statement, adding that the paper is already saving production time and money because of the platesetter's efficiency. According to Varga, the system was selected for its violet-diode technology and pricing, to keep up with expected growth, and to be prepared for chemistry-free platemaking.
The fully automated Mako NEWSmatic HS optimizes plate handling in a straight-through path that eliminates complex load/unload cycles. ECRM calls the device "ideal for all popular single-width newspaper presses (from Berliner to Goss)," accommodating web widths up to 36.5 inches.
