By: E&P Staff Humberto Castello said Thursday he is resigning after seven years as executive editor rather than carry out mandated newsroom reductions at El Nuevo Herald, the Spanish-language sibling daily to The McClatchy Co.'s Miami Herald.
Also stepping down at the Miami-based paper, produced independently of the English-language Herald, is its managing editor Tony Espetia.
Manny Garcia, the Miami Herald's senior editor for news, will replace Castello at El Nuevo Herald. The changes were reported on the Miami Herald's Web site by Andres Viglucci.
In remarks to El Nuevo Herald's newsroom, both Castello and Espetia "stressed their departures are entirely voluntary," the Miami Herald reported. But they added McClatchy's announced intention to cut 19% of its workforce was the deciding factor in their departures.
Castello told the staff he was unwilling to make the reductions ''whether they are justified or not," and that the cuts would force more sharing of content with the Miami Herald.
''In the end, it's going to be something else,'' he said, according to the report.
At the Miami Herald, Garcia's position will be taken over by Features Editor Aminda Marques Gonzalez.
Under Castello, El Nuevo Herald has held its circulation while the Miami Herald has posted dramatically lower numbers.
"Humberto leaves this newspaper in an incredibly strong position to succeed in a challenging multimedia future, and for that we are extremely grateful,'' Publisher David Landsberg told the newsroom, adding that the paper would remain "fully independent" of the Miami Herald.
