(AP) Former Beckley newspaper editor and historian James Wood has died. He was 85.
Melton Mortuary said Wood died Monday at his home in Beckley.
He was a former editor of the Raleigh Register and a former managing editor of the Beckley Post Herald, which were later merged to form The Register-Herald.
Wood wrote several books on local history, including "Raleigh County, West Virginia,'' and "Raleigh County Mine Deaths 1891-2000.''
He was born in Herndon and was a graduate of the University of Kentucky.
He is survived by two nieces and a nephew.
There will be no service at his request. The body was cremated.
