Editorial Cartoonist Dwane Powell Staying at 'N&O' Through Election

Posted
By: E&P Staff The fate of editorial cartoonist Dwane Powell's job at The News Observer of Raleigh, N.C., was discussed in a new story posted at EditorialCartoonists.com.

Back in June, said the piece, the 33-year N&O veteran "was informed by his editor that his position would be reduced to part time in July, along with a subsequent elimination of his benefits, and that he would be restricted in the topics he could draw about.

"Rather than accept the demotion, Powell initially decided to resign. However, by August the paper worked out a temporary arrangement with the cartoonist. 'They asked me to stay until after the election. Essentially I'll finish the year, though probably leave in late November.'

"While there were still details to work out regarding his parting, there was no word whether the N&O would hire another cartoonist after Powell."

EditorialCartoonists.com is the Web site of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists, of which Powell is a member.

Powell's cartoons are distributed by Creators Syndicate.
