By: E&P Staff Given the deep staff cuts in the newsroom this year, as a group, editorial cartoonists are likely feeling the downturn the most.
At least 16 cartoonists, or 18%, have been sliced from the mastheads of newspapers this year, with about 80 left on the job.
Alan Mutter at Reflections of a Newsosaur, points out that if the Rocky Mountain News folds that will bring it down even more.
He cites in
post about the subject that in the 1980s there might have been as many as 300 editorial cartoonists all told.
Over at the Politicker.com, Rob Tornoe made a
list of the 15 editorial cartoonists who lost their jobs this year -- not including Lee Judge of the Kansas City Star.
The Politicker has its own challenges and has shuttered many of the sites in several states. Tornoe reportedly has lost his staff position but has been asked to continue contributing in a major way.
