By: (AP) Stephen J. Adler, deputy managing editor of The Wall Street Journal and editorial director of the Journal Online, has been named editor of Business Week magazine, succeeding Stephen B. Shepard, who announced last week that he would retire from the magazine to become the first dean of a new journalism school at the City University of New York.

Adler will join the magazine in January for a transition period before officially assuming the top editorial job on April 1. Adler is 49, Shepard is 65.

"No one can replace Steve Shepard," Adler said in a statement. "But someone has to follow him, and I'm enormously honored and hugely excited to have that opportunity. I've always admired BusinessWeek's clarity, reliability and insight, and I look forward to helping to build on those traditions while working creatively to meet the opportunities of the digital age."

Business Week is owned by The McGraw-Hill Cos., which is also a major publisher of textbooks and owner of the Standard & Poor's financial services business. The Wall Street Journal is published by Dow Jones & Co.
