WAZ Media Group's Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung flagship and its four other dailies in Germany's North-Rhine Westfalia region are now using EidosMedia's Méthode editorial platform to produce print and online editions.
Announced a year ago, the Méthode platform is at WAZ headquarters in Essen and connected to around 80 local newsrooms by data links. Although the five editorial environments are hosted on one platform, each has its own workflow.
The common physical platform allowed "savings in terms of installation and management costs" and "substantial sharing" of editorial content, Project Manager Markus Wendler said in a statement.
WAZ Media Group has reorganized its news operations, creating a central desk in Essen produces national and international news, economic, sports and other content for the dailies Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung, Neue Ruhr/Neue Rhein Zeitung, and Westfälische Rundschau.
Integration continues online for the five newspapers' shared portal, drawing on a common store of content, along with local articles from each daily. Geo-tagging allows readers to quickly focus on items from their own area.
Méthode was interfaced with many existing components, from ad management to Web publishing, and handles extremely large inputs from various agency and multimedia feeds.
More than 20,000 objects enter the system daily, are constantly updated and available to staffers, according to EidosMedia GmbH Country manager Holger Hofmann, who said in a statement: "On the output side, the editorial platform generates up to 1,500 pages a day, distributed among 100 different print editions."
The project's next stage will bring three more dailies onto the system. The Méthode platform will eventually serve editorial staff of over a thousand.
