Xavier Vidal-Folch, deputy director of the Spanish daily El País for the past 11 years, was re-elected this week to a two-year term as president of the World Editors Forum, the global association for senior newsroom executives within the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA).

Because Vidal-Folch agreed to run for re-election only if he could serve a shorter period than the traditional two-year term of office, he will resign when he feels the organization's future has been secured or if he considers that his contribution to issues arising from the merger between WAN and IFRA last year is no longer substantial.

Before being named deputy director, Vidal-Folch was the newspaper's chief editor and Brussels bureau chief.

Harald Stanghelle, political editor of Norway's Aftenposten since 2000, was re-elected WEF vice president. He previously was the paper's news editor and had served as editor-in-chief of Dagbladet.

Two new members were named to the WEF Board: Ricardo Kirschbaum, executive editor of Argentina's Clarín, and François Dufour, editor-in-chief of L'actu, in France.
