'El Paso Times' Names New Editor

By: Chris Lopez, a 25-year veteran of daily newspapers, has been named editor of the El Paso Times.

Lopez, who will begin work Oct. 29, is the former editor and vice president of news for the Contra Costa Times newspaper in Walnut Creek, Calif. More recently he was a managing editor and general manager of The Desert Sun newspaper in Palm Springs, Calif.

Lopez, 47, started his journalism career in 1983 after graduating from Adams State College in his hometown of Alamosa, Colo.

He worked for nine years as a sports reporter and local government reporter at The Pueblo Chieftain newspaper in Pueblo, Colo., and then spent seven years as a reporter and assigning editor at The Denver Post.

In 2000, he joined the Contra Costa Times as regional editor and eventually became its editor and vice president of news. He left the Contra Costa Times at the end of 2006 after the newspaper was sold, and then joined The Desert Sun.

He was on the team that won a Pulitzer Prize for The Denver Post newsroom's spot news coverage of the Columbine High School shootings.

A year ago, Lopez stepped outside daily journalism to help the city of Denver with its planning and hosting of the Democratic National Convention.

He replaces former editor Don Flores, who left the newspaper in mid-August.
