Election -- and Editorials in Military Papers? -- Last Straws for Rumsfeld

Posted
By: E&P Staff Donald Rumsfeld will be finally forced out as Secretary of Defense, hours after election results turned against his Iraq policy -- and days after editorials in four top newspapers for military personnel called for his dismissal.

The President announced during his 1 p.m. press conference that Robert Gates, the former head of the Central Intelligence Agency, would take over as Defense Secretary, and would bring a "new set of eyes" to the country's Iraq policy.

The news leaked out just before 1 p.m. ET, in an AP report and via other sources.

The Republicans lost control of the House and quite possibly the Senate during Tuesday's elections.
