Updated at 3:15 p.m. EST, Oct. 31. Clarification: The original version of this story did not contain the actual Electronic Edition circulation numbers for the latest ABC reporting period. They are included below.Electronic editions faithful to the appearance of print newspapers haven't generated mass traction yet, but in at least one publisher's case, such a replica is helping boost audited circulation numbers.
The New York Times is among the newspapers that will proudly report a circulation increase for the six months ended Sept. 30 -- the latest FAS-FAX reporting period for the Audit Bureau of Circulations. The FAS-FAX is expected to be released Nov. 1.
The
Times will report that weekday circulation rose 0.33%, to 1,113,000 from 1,109,371, and Sunday circ rose 0.19%, to 1,671,865 from 1,668,650.
Times Co. spokesman Toby Usnik told E&P Online that about 3,600 consumers have purchased The New York Times Electronic Edition since the product was first offered. For the latest ABC reporting period, about 2,200 Monday-Friday Electronic Editions were counted as paid circ, and about 1,700 for Sundays.
Those numbers are close to the 3,215 extra copies sold on Sunday and the 3,629 extra copies sold on weekdays, as reported for the latest ABC reporting period.
"Even without the Electronic Edition, we'd still be up in all categories: Monday through Friday and Sunday," Usnik said. "But the Electronic Edition definitely has helped."
The Times Electronic Edition is provided by Austin, Texas-based NewsStand Inc., which is partly owned by the New York Times Co.
