By: E&P Staff A holiday serial from the wife-and-husband writing team of Katharine Fair and Christopher "Chip" Scanlan is being offered again by Universal Press Syndicate.
"Mystery @ Elf Camp: A Holiday Reading Adventure" is a 14-part series -- illustrated by V.L. Totire -- that's designed to appear in newspapers from Sunday, Dec. 9, through Saturday, Dec. 22.
In the story, troubled children are given a chance to fix problems in their lives by helping Santa and his elves with a last-minute emergency in his workshop. The serial revolves around three teens: Meghan, whose family is about to lose its home; Nicole, whose parents are splitting up; and Jack, whose mother recently died. After receiving an invitation to Elf Camp, they become embroiled in the mystery of who is trying to sabotage Santa's high-tech toy production system.
"Mystery @ Elf Camp," first released last December, is the second holiday serial for the award-winning Fair and Scanlan duo. Their first was "The Holly Wreath Man," which became a 2004 book published by Andrews McMeel Publishing -- a sister company to Universal.
Fair is an ad copywriter, substitute teacher, and freelance writer. Scanlan is a senior faculty member at the Poynter Institute for Media Studies who produces the "Chip on Your Shoulder" writing advice column on Poynter's Web site. He has also worked as a feature writer for the St. Petersburg Times, done freelance pieces for newspapers and magazines, and authored and edited books about writing.
The Cleveland-based Totire has done humorous greeting cards, children's books, toy designs, and more.
