'Enquirer' Publisher, Cartoonist Named Among Cincinnati's Most Powerful

Posted
By: E&P Staff In its list of the ?Power 100? most influential businesspeople, CincyBusiness magazine ranked Cincinnati Enquirer Publisher Margaret E. Buchanan number 11, the highest ranking for anyone in the region?s media.

?Buchanan directly controls the business future of just about every piece of newsprint in the region,? the magazine wrote. ?Gannett Co. owns The Enquirer, The Kentucky Enquirer, the two dozen Community Press weeklies, CINWeekly and -- through a joint operating agreement (JOA) set to expire Dec. 31, 2007 -- controls business operations of the Cincinnati and Kentucky Posts. When the Post closes on or before Dec. 31, 2007, you'll be getting your local newspapers from Buchanan, or you won't be getting one at all.?

Just two notches below Buchanan, at number 13, is Eric Kearney, publisher of the black-oriented weekly Cincinnati Herald. The magazine said Kearney ?already wielded enormous influence? as a newspaper owner, but noted he now has more clout as a newly appointed state senator.

?He and his wife, Jan-Michele Lemon Kearney (the editor of the Herald) are making a point of getting out into the community at large,? the magazine said.

Ken Lowe, president and CEO of Cincinnati-based E.W. Scripps Co. was ranked number 19. The magazine noted his ?high profile in the community? as chair of the city?s 2005 Fine Arts Fund.

?Perhaps most notably, Lowe is the executive who'll make the final decision on the future of the Cincinnati Post, the city's afternoon newspaper, when the JOA with the Enquirer expires,? the magazine said. ?Lowe has the power to keep us a two-newspaper town -- or not.?

After the top 25 most influential figures, the remaining ?Power 100? are unranked, but listed in alphabetical order. Included in the list were Doug Bolton, publisher of Cincinnati Business Courier; Jim Borgman, Enquirer editorial cartoonist; and Cliff Peale, Enquirer business columnist.
