By: E&P Staff E&P announces today the six winners of its inaugural "Production All Stars" award for press and post-press managers. A cover story and profiles of the six winners appear in the September issue of E&P (available to subscribers in the "In Print" section of this site).

The awards will be presented on Sept. 20 at the annual conference of the International Newspaper Group (ING) in Detroit at the Crowne Plaza-Airport Hotel. E&P will be making a donation of $500 for each winner to ING?s Scholarship fund for college students.

Three winners for press and post-press were chosen -- in three different circulation categories -- by the collective votes of a panel of top judges.

The winners are:

PRESS

Stefanie Anderson, vice president/production, Daily Herald of Arlington Heights, Ill.

Tom Tate, production/IT director, Springfield (Mo.) News-Leader

Dan O?Brien, operations director, The Pantagraph of Bloomington, Ill.

POST-PRESS

Shirley Henderson, packaging operations manager, The Seattle Times

Andrea Mathewson, vice president/production, Akron (Ohio) Beacon Journal

Daniel L. Thayer, production director, Press-Republican of Plattsburgh, N.Y.

E&P?s article about the winners observes, ?While their backgrounds, newspapers, companies, and markets may differ, the six winners of E&P?s inaugural Production All-Stars awards share at least one important professional characteristic: They all worked their way up through the ranks, sharing what they learned, remembering who helped them along, and assisting those who will succeed them in an industry coping with changing business demands and technologies.?

The awards process went like this: Candidates were selected by others at their newspapers. Nomination forms were submitted by top managers, and signed by executives at those papers. Winners were then picked via a tally of votes by five judges: Gary Watson, Jack Stanley, Mark Mikolajczyk, Ken Harding, and Judy Oliver Busby.

Sponsors for 2006 were Goss, Agfa and K&M Newspapers Services Inc.
