By: For the second time in three years, Editor & Publisher has won the highest honor in business journalism for its staff-written editorials. At a ceremony Wednesday marking the 49th annual Jesse H. Neal National Business Awards attended by nearly 500 publishers and editors at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York, E&P Editor Greg Mitchell was also awarded one of two individual prizes, the McAllister Editorial Fellowship for 2003.

Administered by American Business Media, the Neal Awards honor business-to-business or trade journalism. They were given to 27 publications after the judging of 1,093 entries. Other winners included: Photo District News, Computerworld, and Architectural Record.

E&P also took top honors in its class for editorials, written by Editor-at-Large Mark Fitzgerald, in 2001.

As winner of the McAllister award, Mitchell took home a crystal bowl, a $1,000 honorarium, and a chance to teach at the Northwestern University Medill School of Journalism later this year.

Mitchell, 55, has been editor of E&P for one year, previously serving as features editor. He is also the author of eight books, most recently The Campaign of the Century and Tricky Dick and the Pink Lady (Random House), Joy in Mudville (Pocket), and two books with Robert Jay Lifton, Who Owns Death? (Harper Collins) and Hiroshima in America (Putnam).

American Business Media also announced that in 2004 it will present a new prize for "courageous" journalism, The Timothy White Award, named for the late editor of Billboard.
