ESPN Goes After Hyperlocal Sports

By: E&P Staff ESPN has its eyes on the local market. The sporting behemoth, which found success with its hometown sports coverage on ESPN Chicago, plans to roll the concept out to three more cities, New York, Los Angeles and Dallas.

The New York Times reports that ESPN executives are spinning this as the "first inning" in hyperlocal sports coverage.

The Chicago Tribune is taking the matter seriously. Bill Adee, editor for digital media, told the New York Times, "We are looking forward to the local sports turf battle in the weeks and months ahead."

In less than three months, ESPN Chicago has become the city's top sports site, according to unique visitor data for June from comScore.
