Carl E. Esposito has been named publisher of The Daily Times, Maryville, Tenn., effective Nov. 8, succeeding Max Crotser, who retired at the end of August after 16 years at the newspaper.

The Daily Times was acquired in late August from Horvitz Newspapers by Blount County Publishers, an affiliate of Jones  Media, Greeneville, Tenn.

Jones Media Chief Operating Officer Ralph Baldwin has been serving as Daily Times interim publisher since Crotser's retirement, and will continue in that position until Esposito assumes his responsibilities.

Esposito, 57, has been serving since 2006 as regional publisher and group leader of Media General's Tri-Cities/Southwest Virginia Group, including the Bristol Herald Courier, six weeklies and CBS affiliate WJHL-TV, in Johnson City. Before he joined Media General five years ago, Esposito spent 20 years in leadership positions for other media organizations, including Community Newspaper Holdings, Cox Ohio Publishing, and Thomson Newspapers.

In April, Esposito's newspaper was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for meritorious public service. He began his newspaper career right out of college as an assistant controller for Chew Newspapers, a family-owned newspaper group in his native Ohio, and held his first publisher's position in 1989.

"I have known Carl for many years and was thrilled when he accepted our offer," Gregg K. Jones, president & CEO of Jones Media and Blount County Publishers, said in a statement. Jones credited Esposito with a "decades-long demonstrated commitment to produce wonderful newspapers that reflect and engage their readership."
