Eugene 'Register-Guard' Cuts Staff by Nearly 6%

By: E&P Staff Two months after eliminating 35 full-time equivalent positions, The Register-Guard in Eugene, Ore., swung the axe again Monday, cutting the equivalent of 16 full-time positions, or 5.9% of the staff.

In an article Tuesday by staff writer Ilene Aleshire, Register-Guard Publisher Tony Baker said "a lousy economy" was responsible for the cuts, which included full- and part-time positions as well as some open jobs. The cuts were spread across many departments, the newspaper reported.

These latest cuts, following the eliminations in June, leave the Register-Guard with 305 full- and part-time employees.

The newspaper is also asking more concessions from its labor unions, and is offering an early retirement program for veteran employees.

Chief Operating Officer David Pero told the paper he hopes those steps will make any further layoffs unnecessary.

Publisher Baker said ad revenue for May was nearly 16% below what was budgeted -- and the slump only got worse in the summer. From June through the first two weeks of August, he said, each month has been about 25% below budget.
