Evelyn Gardner Named Editor, Publisher of 'The Katy (Texas) Times'

By: E&P Staff Evelyn Gardner has been named editor and publisher of The Katy (Texas) Times, the paper recently reported. Gardner replaces Ken Steger, who is retiring after 20 years at the Times.

Gardner began her career in the newspaper industry as a typesetter at a small Mississippi newspaper, the Times reported. Her subsequent work as an advertising director for a daily newspaper in Hope, Ark. garnered several awards from the Arkansas Press Association, including ?Best Series of Ads,? ?Best Promotional Newspaper Campaign,? and ?Most Successful Advertising Idea.?

According to the Times, Gardner assisted in the 1988 launch of ?Austin Downtown,? a monthly magazine that covered events in the Texas capital. Gardner stayed in Texas for the following 16 years, working at Texas Student Publications at the University of Texas and serving as advertising director for the university?s student newspaper. Her work with the national organization of College Media Advisers contributed to her selection as Business Adviser of the Year in 2001.

In 2004, Gardner launched The Austin Student with other staff members of the University of Texas. It was the first independent newspaper to provide competition for the student newspaper of the University of Texas, the Times reported.
