By: E&P Staff Shiela Boggess, the former managing editor of the Baxter Bulletin in Mountain Home, Ark., has filed a federal lawsuit against the newspaper and its parent company, the Gannett Corp., claiming her firing was related to her having been diagnosed with diabetes.

In court papers, Boggess says that she was fired in April, 2005, months after telling her boss that she had been diagnosed with the disease. She is charging the newspaper with age and disability discrimination

?[The paper ] had a practice of discriminating against individuals who took medical leave or who exercised rights under the Family Medical Leave Act,? Joseph Gilker, Boggess? attorney reportedly said in his brief to the court. Gilker said one employee was fired because of his unhealthy appearance and four other people were asked to resign because of medical problems.
