In light of the testimony of Publisher Timothy White, the San Francisco Examiner
ran a letter to readers defending the newspaper's editorial integrity.

White testified Monday that the Examiner promised San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown
favorable coverage in exchange for his support of Hearst's purchase of the
Chronicle.

'We condemn any trading of editorial support for political favors as a violation of
that integrity,' read the letter signed by 'The Examiner Staff.'

The letter pointed out, 'As recently as Tuesday, Brown said that the Examiner
'continues to write bad [things] about me.''

Hearst suspended White Tuesday, and began an internal investigation of the 'horse
trading.' A company spokesperson said he could be fired.
