By: Jennifer Saba People spent more time visiting The New York Times' Web site compared with other newspaper Web sites in the top 30 list for January, according to the latest data from Nielsen Online. The average time spent per person over the course of January was almost 36 minutes at NYTimes.com.
While the NYTimes.com remains at the top of list, the time spent per person dropped in January compared to the same month last year. The average time spent per person at the NYTimes.com was 44 minutes in January 2007.
Newspaper Web sites are sensitive to news events and other factors that might affect the variations in the average time spent.
Each of the top five newspaper Web sites experienced drops in the average time spent per person in January with the exception The Washington Post, which was virtually flat.
Readers of Azcentral.com, the online arm of The Arizona Republic, more than doubled the amount of time they spent this past January compared to January 2007, up from an average of seven minutes to almost 17 minutes.
The New York Post and the New York Daily News increased the average time spent per reader in January compared to the same month last year. Newsday's declined from about seven minutes in January 2007 versus three minutes in January 2008.
