By: Jennifer Saba The New York Times still easily tops our monthly chart for most popular newspaper Web sites -- especially with the demise of TimesSelect -- but nearby news outlet Newsday has shown the greatest growth in the past year.
Newsday's online traffic has climbed 182% to 5.3 million unique visitors compared to the same period a year ago, according to new data from Nielsen Online (owned by E&P's parent company).
This month for the first time we offer year-over-year growth. Tomorrow we will present our first full report on minutes spent, which varies wildly from site to site.
The numbers also show that The New York Times benefited greatly by dropping its subscription model TimesSelect. The Times has grown traffic by over 50% in the past year to 18.9 million visitors, pulling away from other online newspapers by 9 million people. USA Today, which is the second most visited Web site in November, had 9.5 million visitors. The Wall Street Journal too doubled its traffic to 5.6 million uniques.
Traffic for both the Houston Chronicle and the Arizona Republic fell 26% and 24% respectively in the past year. And yet, people spent more time on Azcentral.com. The site's total minutes for the month of November rose 172% compared to last year.
Some other notables: Village Voice Media grew its traffic 127% and the total minutes spent by 89%. The Orlando Sentinel's monthly uniques increased 27% and the total minutes jumped 124%.
Below is the list of the top 30 newspaper Web sites for November ranked by unique audience. The percent change compares November 2007 and November 2006. Please note this is a custom made list for E&P.
