By: Jennifer Saba Up against difficult January comparables because of last year's presidential inauguration, the average time spent per person at the top current events and news sites fell, according to Nielsen Online.
Nielsen defines time spent as the average time spent per person over the course of the month.
At some news organizations including Fox News Digital Network, the average time spent was down by more than half. Only Tribune Newspapers increased its average time spent, up to 10 minutes and 26 seconds compared to nine minutes and three seconds a year ago.
The average time spent can fluctuate due to news events and other factors. Also keep in mind that Nielsen vastly expanded its panels in June 2009, which could impact year-over-year trends.
Below is the average time spent per person (hours: minutes: seconds) in January 2010 compared to January 2009. The sites are ranked by
January 2010 unique users.
