EXCLUSIVE: Top 30 News Sites for May -- Some Biggies Stall

By: Jennifer Saba Two top news sites grew monthly unique visitors the most in May: Fox News Digital Network, up 49% and the New York Daily News Online, also up 49% year-over-year, according to new data from Nielsen Online.

The Huffington Post's traffic growth finally slowed a bit in May, but remained among the most robust. Monthly uniques at the site were up 42% year-over-year to 6.7 million users. In April, the Huff Post increased its monthly uniques 157% compared to April 2008.

The number of people visiting the top 5 sites stalled in May. Two of the top five -- NYTimes.com and AOL News -- had negative growth while the others advanced slightly.

The NYTimes.com argues that Nielsen's numbers do not match internal figures or other independent sources in May.

The list for May ranks the top 30 current events and global news destinations by unique users.

Below is the May list of the top current event and global news destination sites provided by Nielsen (owned by E&P's parent company). The Web sites are ranked by uniques and based on U.S. home and work panels. The percent change is for May 2009 compared to May 2008.
