By: Jennifer Saba Just one-third of newspaper Web sites managed to increase the average time spent per person by more than one minute, according to a list of top 30 sites ranked by uniques for January.
Nielsen Online tracks the average time spent per person at a site during the month.
The big gainers were USA Today, up almost 22 minutes from 13 minutes in January 2008. The Wall Street Journal Online practically doubled to 14 minutes and 22 seconds in January 2009 compared to the same month a year ago The International Herald Tribune went to 7 minutes and 43 seconds from 2 minutes and 44 seconds in January 2008.
The average time spent per person at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution fell almost by half to roughly 13 minutes from 22 minutes. But uniques for the site rose 39% in January year-over-year.
The Orlando Sentinel shaved time off the average: In January of 2009, the average time spent was approximately 6 minutes. In January 2008, it was more than 14 minutes.
There are many reasons why the average time spent per person can vary including news events or even the number of visitors. A big spike in uniques -- more people attracted to the site -- could account for a lower a time spent per person.
Below is the list for the top 30 newspapers ranked by
uniques in January provided by Nielsen Online (owned by E&P's parent company).
