EXCLUSIVE: Yahoo Top 'News' Site for June -- See Big Gainers

By: Jennifer Saba Two of the top three biggest gainers in June uniques were newspaper Web sites, according to Nielsen Online.

For the top 30 online current events and global news destinations, the Examiner group of newspapers experienced the most growth at 97% to 4.7 million uniques year-over-year.

The New York Daily News and the Huffington Post were neck and neck in percentage increases. At the Daily News, June uniques advanced 84% year-over-year to 6.9 million while at the Huff Post traffic rose 85% to 7.4 million uniques.

In the top five, uniques for both MSNBC and NYTimes.com declined 4% and 1%, respectively.

It should be noted that effective with June data, Nielsen had expanded its panels. The measurement firm and Web researcher increased the size of its panels by a factor of eight. "For some sites," Nielsen said, "trending of previously reported data with current results may show percentage differences attributable to these products enhancements and should only be compared directionally."

The expanded panels allow Nielsen to provide data for 10 times as many sites -- 30,000 versus 3,000.

Below are the top 30 current events and global news destinations for the month of June. The sites are ranked by unique users and the percent change compares June 2009 uniques to June 2008 uniques. Please note that several factors including news events can cause swings in traffic.
