'EXPRESS-NEWS' CUTS WEB WIDTH

The San Antonio Express-News became the latest newspaper to adopt the 50-
inch web width when it launched a redesign that also boasted a smudgeless, soy-
based ink and easier-to-navigate format.

The Hearst Corp.-owned daily unveiled the new look in its March 5 issue, in
which Publisher W. Lawrence Walker Jr. called the approach evolutionary, rather
than revolutionary. "We are not reinventing the wheel," Walker said in a note to
readers. "We have updated our look and feel in an effort to make it easier for
you to navigate the newspaper."

The paper's Old English nameplate remains on Page One, but with two top-of-the-
page teasers instead of the previous three and a bolder, blue bar replacing the
lighter, black one. Because of the reduced web width, body type is slightly
smaller, albeit sharper.

Other changes include expanded TV listings; a new Sunday arts-and-entertainment
section; a new business section that focuses on a different topic each day, such
as real estate, technology, and personal finance; and a new summary format
highlighting stories and columns on the second page of each section. Editor
Robert Rivard said efforts to reduce newsprint-related costs spurred the initiatives.
