Extremely 'Weird' Golden Globes a 'Debacle' for Blogger

Posted
By: E&P Staff David Carr, The New York Times reporter who turns "Carpetbagger" blogger, or just "Bagger," during the awards season, issued one of the first reports after tonight's "ceremony" -- which, because of the writer's strike, didn't amount to much more than the reading of winners.

Carr admitted that, for all his expertise, most of his picks in the top categories were wrong. But at least he got to sit in a seat that normally would go to George Clooney, he quipped.

Here is the dispatch, with many others from Carr up at www.nytimes.com.

The results are in. The evening was a downright weird one and contained it share of competitive surprises.

?Atonement,? which had been considered to be losing luster in the awards race, stormed back to life with a win as best motion picture drama. The audience of journalists and press agents gasped a bit when it was announced. ?Sweeney Todd? bested ?Juno? in the best motion picture musical or comedy, also a surprise to some. Cate Blanchett won a best supporting actress for her role, with the HFPA choosing her over Amy Ryan from ?Gone Baby Gone,? who has been the much chattered about favorite. And the directors win for Julian Schnabel for ?The Diving Bell and the Butterfly? came completely out of left field when the only directors being talked about have been Paul Thomas Anderson and the Coen brothers so far this year.

In case you were wondering, the Bagger got slaughtered in his picks. More details on the debacle later.
