By: Joe Strupp The Valley Morning Star of Harlingen, Texas, will become the first Freedom Communications daily paper to charge for access to its Web site, the paper reported Monday.
A Web story stated the paper "has been selected to be the first newspaper in a Freedom Communications' initiative to use its online edition to boost readers' subscription values." Seven-day subscribers will have unlimited access to the online edition,
valleymorningstar.com.
Online-only subscribers will have to pay a monthly fee of $3.95, or a daily 75-cent charge. Print subscribers who receive the paper only on weekends or Sunday will pay a smaller monthly fee for Web access.
"It will allow greater value to our many loyal print-edition subscribers by not giving away the news to non-subscribers," Publisher Tyler Patton said in a statement. "The days of giving content away, which costs money to create and for which we charge our print subscribers, I think, are just over."
