F. Granger Weil, 95, a former editor and publisher of the Port Huron
(Mich.) Times Herald, died Wednesday at the Blue Water Lodge, a
retirement community in Fort Gratiot, Mich.

A Port Huron native, Weil started at the paper founded by his father,
Louis, in 1927. Weil worked as a part-time police reporter and
assistant editor at the paper while in high school in Port Huron.

After graduating from Notre Dame University in 1933 and serving in
the U.S. Navy in World War II, Weil rejoined the Times Herald and was
named as an executive vice president at the paper in 1947. He
became publisher of the daily in 1952, and was named its president
and editor in 1960.

In 1971 Weil oversaw the transfer of the family-owned paper to
Gannett Co. Inc., and continued to handle editorial duties at the paper
for several years before officially retiring.

Outside the Times Herald, Weil was a devoted family man who
volunteered time to several professional organizations and religious
groups. Weil also helped raise money for the Memorial Stadium and a
YMCA in the Port Huron area.
